With their long lasting flowers, Heathers are the perfect low-maintenance plant to bridge the transition from Summer to Autumn.

Their strong colours make them ideal for adding accents to a patio or drifts of vibrant groundcover, especially if your working with acidic soils.

With more than 800 species available, Heathers generally fall into two groups: Erica and Calluna.

Ericas are generally known as winter and spring flowering heathers whilst Callunas are generally known as summer and autumn flowering. By taking advantage of this seasonality, you can have a heather in bloom at any time of year!

Most heathers require acidic soil conditions, making them ideal for planting in pots where they can enjoy an ericaceous compost. However, there are some varieties that will tolerate chalky or alkaline soil, such as Erica cornea and Erica darleyensis.

Whilst they prefer full sun, they will grow in moderate shade. Either way, a well-drained soil that has been enriched with a little organic matter will help them thrive.

After flowering, a light clipping will encourage them to remain thick and lustrous, producing shoots which will flower again next year. A slow release fertiliser, suitable for acid loving plants, will also help them stay looking their best.
